Cynthia Steffe: South by Southwest

Apr 3, 2002/ FW/ --- Parson's graduate Cynthia Steffe is getting better and better!

Her show held last February 11 at The Theater in Bryant Park showed both polish and sophistication.

Following the Americana trend that has hit all the major fashion cities this season, Cynthia Steffe decided to go to the prairie for her inspiration.

Ruffles, layered skirts and bell sleeves brought the 18th century southwest feel on the runway.

Working with soft sheer fabric and raw leather, the designer gave an "almost romantic" feel to her collection.

I said "almost" because it is not romance which is the key to this collection. It's the cutting edge and sleek designs that made it worked!

This season, Steffe also sent evening wear on the runway.

Mixing lace and stretch fabric and using the prairie again as an inspiration, the designer came up with body-hugging slim silhouette for a night out in town.

And from the looks of it, I will not be surprised if one of these gowns show up at the red carpet.

Accessories include the "dog collar" either with a charm or flowers. And of course, boots for shoes and the evern present hat that has dominated most of the collections this season.

The hair is "slicked-back" worn with a pony tail. It was softened by "crimps," which was used instead of curls which was the height of hair fashion during the 1800s.

Cynthia Steffe established herself as a serious designer with this collection.
