NEW YORK, Sep 9, 2004/ FW/ --- If ever Hollywood is going to do a remake of “Casablanca” set in modern times, the movie’s costume designer will have a field day with Cynthia Steffe’s Spring / Summer 2005 collection because it represents the best of Morocco.
Inspired by “postcards of colonial harems,” from the turn of the 20th century Morocco, Cynthia Steffe culled from the various influences of the country – French, Spanish and Arab – to bring forth a contemporary collection that features exquisite embroidery, delicate hand crochet, and subtle brocade.
Though definitely ready-to-wear, the craftsmanship of fine and intricate detail work on washed linens and cotton canvases brings it to demi-couture level.
Yet, the designer kept her restraint, keeping the finery to a minimum, understanding that her young clientele will appreciate dressing elegantly or eloquently, but will shy away from embellishments that will be more appropriate to their thirty-something sisters.
So the flowing ankle-length red gown with a deep-V neck was minimally adorned with beaded crystals enough to emphasize the neck, shoulders and rise of the bosom, making it the perfect frock for a sorority party.
The green sheer chiffon top with front pleats was given gilded embroidery on the placket adding a youthful elegance to a coed’s wardrobe.
With this collection, Cynthia Steffe proved once again that she has her finger on the pulse of her target market. From coast to coast, teens and young adults today are “dressing up” when they shed their jeans and t-shirts after school.
Gen I and Gen Y are discovering the finer things in life, and the New York-based designer is making sure that those are available to them.
