LOS ANGELES, Oct 29, 2003/ FW/ --- Esteban Cortazar kicked off Mercedes Benz Shows LA yesterday with his red carpet gowns and designer collections at the University Club in downtown Los Angeles.
Though this is Cortazar’s debut collection at the City of Angels, his reputation has preceded him. His child prodigy status both in New York and Miami was translated and then went up one notch in Los Angeles.
Reason: His collection also screams ‘Los Angeles lifestyle,’ the same way it screamed New York lifestyle and Miami lifestyle. In short, Esteban Cortazar got the pulse of the cities and could literally make them eat out of his designer hands.
His red silk jersey/chiffon one shoulder dress, which opened the show, set the tone of his collection – Esteban Cortazar creations fitting for both day and nightlife.
His fuchsia silk linen drawstring mini-dress can go from a day at the boardwalk in Santa Monica worn with a color coordinated flip-flop to a quick change up into an open toed stiletto for a night on Sunset boulevard.
Though Cortazar is already 19, and retains his child design prodigy status because he started showing when he was barely 17, and still in high school, his Spring 2004 collection proved that experience has made him more edgy.
Showcasing the versatility of various silk chiffon pieces with mini dresses, pants which are either high-waisted or palazzo cut, hooded blouses and halter dresses, Cortazar can easily be Hollywood’s next darling.
So, don’t be surprised if a celebrity will answer “Esteban Cortazar,” to the traditional red carpet question, “Who you are wearing?” next Oscar night.
The Miami-based designer was also right on target with the ‘glitter’ trend this season with his generous use of Swarovski crystals on the details of his creations.
It was a very strong collection, and the City of Angels showed their admiration to Cortazar by giving him a standing ovation when he took his bow at the end of his show.
And if you’re wondering what inspired this young designer this season – “a beautiful woman,” that’s what he told FashionWindows after his show.
