NEW YORK, Sep 16, 2006/ FW/ --- The Gen art show is said to be one of the most fascinating shows of the week. Many editors attend this show to see what the streets are doing on a large scale.
As onlookers walked into the theater, you could hear the vocals of a southern gospel choir singing "Old Happy Days." I did not know if I was walking into the right venue or not. As a Southern Baptist preacher approached the pulpit and got the crowd raved up, the show began.
The first of the eight Motorola sponsored designers were Mischon. Presenting Jackie O inspired silhouettes in muted mustard, Mischon accessorized completely with wrist gloves and large button closures on suits. Puff pleated sleeves; longer hems and back buttons gave authentic depth to her collection.
Label April/ May followed up by showing simple floral prints in cement, gray, black and cream. The selection of designers were very diverse and showed different avenues and opinions on fashion right now.
Lincoln/Mayne was one of the presenters that is definitely more visible in the market. Their successful tee-shirts and top lines are in many boutiques and stores throughout New York. Lincoln/Mayne's men's line is for the confident young man who does not mind wearing sea-foam green skinny pants along with braces and patent leather shoes.
Fedler and Fedler was definitely one of the more mature lines of the show. They showed more sensual, womanly silhouettes. A particular pair of black trousers were show stopping with a sheer see through back.
Telfar is doing men in tights. Bringing in a Japanese street sense with no structure, cut sleeves and and flexible hems. Their extra crouch trousers are a definite fore casted trend for spring.
ONG is a young design team that has come up from a street and skateboard culture. Their success is due to their graphics and connection to the street culture of inner city youths. They showed many soft Missoni like prints in muted colours.
Sunshine and Shadow is a hot line that is similar to many young designers we have seen in the past. Their details and accessories were mentionable with colorful shoes accompanied by wide shoulder shirts and tanks with braces straps. A workmen's jumper in grey was notable.
Bruno Grizco presented as mega group Gnarls Barkley played. Grizco capsule collection was filled with light creams in even lighter fabrics. Staying on market, they showed billowy silhouettes and backdrop baby doll dresses with oversized bejeweled bracelets and rings.
Gen Art is where some trends are made and you can tell that these designers deserve to be given a chance for their art to be seen and recognized by the fashion community.
