Hamish Morrow: Look Ma, No Threads!

LONDON, Sep 23, 2003/ FW/ --- One of the curious things about Morrow (and there are quite
a few curious things about this fellow) is that the collection he shows is never produced,
and hence not on the consumer market!
Yet, his London spring summer 2004 presentation that was more of a performance than
fashion show, had elements of amazingly studied simplicity, style and forward thinking.
Hi-Tech and experimental, with the revelation after the show that none of the outfits had
been sewn together and hence not an inch of thread used, but had been pieced together by
ultrasonic welding.
His concept of geometry and use of alternative fabrics was enviable, but it is the fact
that Morrow is able to piece together varying influences and assemble them into a coherent
assortment that makes his avant guarde outlook immediate and touchable.
Swarovski crystals (one of his sponsors) sparkled on dresses, skirts, tops and were often
used as clasps and clips appearing to hold the garment together.
With sports jackets made of ultra light diverse material, clear plastic inserts in shoes,
sheer and transparent dresses, the collection concentrates on beauty and beautifying.
Yatching and computers his chosen themes, with thick ropes, harnesses and large metal eyelets
used as accessories and accents.
Free yet grounded, stiff technology made soft and feminine, coloured mixed with dull,
Hamish Morrow succeeded in taking often for granted face value ugliness and turning
it into something charming.
