Haneza: A Razor Sharp Eye for Design
It is no coincidence that Korean born and raised Haneza creates fashions that touch
women on a deeper level than simply making them feel good.
With a mantra that a woman's inner world must be expressed through the clothes she
wears, and a philosophy that fashion "is more than just about looking beautiful, it's
about exploring the self," Haneza's creations reflect the inner sensitivity of an
artist as well as a razor sharp eye for design.
Haneza's affinity for abstract art, particularly the colors of Kandinsky and visual
images in general, began when she was young, building ingenious creations from
seemingly nothing at all.
For instance, she created costumes made from silver cigarette wrappers for matchsticks
when her family could not afford the luxury of a Barbie doll, and took a big white shirt
from her brother that she dyed after seeing Kim Novalk wearing a chic mustard one in a
film.
"I wore it with cigarette pants," remembers the designer, who says she'd probably be a
painter if she wasn't a clothing designer.
"It was one of the most memorable moments of my life when I discovered the joy of making
something out of the visual images that inspired me."
Innate talent and a solid background at fashion design school in Seoul and F.I.T. in New York
City, not to mention over twenty years in the business, including a popular follwing in Europe,
have made the designer's recent launch in the U.S. long overdue.
Her daring yet simple designs and intricate, unique fabrics with unusal textural detailing and
surreal mixtures of color range from $500-3,000.
"I love the freedom, culture and explosive energy of New York," says Haneza, who keeps a
home in the Big Apple as well as in Seoul, a perfect medling of East and West that sums up
the Haneza lifestyle.
"I design for the 'sensitive' career woman, I guess you could say," she continues. "But the
clothing never loses its sexiness."
