NEW YORK, Sep 11, 2004/ FW/ --- With the theme “Heatherette High” for their Spring 2005 catwalk show, Richie Rains & Traver Rains literally and figuratively came of age last Friday as the design duo debuted under the tents at Bryant Park.
Launching their label in February 2000, the design duo became known for their disposable chic style was part of New York’s alternative fashion scene as they have elected to show off site season after season.
But for Spring 2005, underneath a bow made of balloons and a disco sphere, reminiscent of the high school prom and graduation dance, Richie Rains & Traver Rains became designers who have plans to be taken seriously.
In a party atmosphere, featuring celebrity catwalkers that include heiresses Lydia Hearst-Shaw and Paris Hilton and rock princesses Lizzie Jagger and Kimberly Stewart, Heatherette’s kitschy, humorous and pun-filled creations were presented to the press and buyers and a slew of New York’s socialites that sat front row.
Though the treatment was lighthearted, there were serious design concepts in the collection. Richie Rains & Traver Rains displayed a somber understanding of their business by sending clothes that are both wearable and eye-catching, a collection that will surely pique the interest of retail buyers.
Yet the best part of all is that both of them managed to stay true to what they stand for – fun and a whimsical attitude towards fashion, a feat that can only be accomplished by designers who had honed their craft.
The audience subliminally grasping the shifting of the gear gave their approval by laughing boisterously to the antics of Amanda LaPore and giving a standing ovation when Naomi Campbell came out dressed only with stars!
