NEW YORK, Apr 7, 2002/ --- The Lucy Barnes store sign was still being painted as guests
arrived to inspect the Brit designer's new shop on Perry Street last night.
"We got the space seven days ago and we've worked solidly since then trying to have it
ready," Barnes said.
"I was so nervous about taking on a new space but this is such a great area and the
traffic is good, so I am hoping the store will be busy."
Barnes is known for her original use of vintage fabrics, beads and buttons in her own
designs, but also intends to have select vintage pieces for sale in the store.
"People love individual and unusual pieces so we are trying hard to have some fabulous
vintage stock available."
The store, an intimate space with white brick walls, wood floors and plenty of mirrors
will house the vintage pieces, the Lucy Barnes label, as well as jewelry and some house wares.
Barnes's husband, gallery owner Gavin Brown - who is getting ready to open a new
exhibition on Saturday - found time to man the bar. Juggling a child in one arm and
managing to pour glass after glass of champagne and hand out cupcakes from Magnolia
Bakery with his free hand, Brown is clearly an enthusiastic supporter of his wife's
new endeavor.
"I think the store is great, I'm really excited for her," he told FWD.
