NEW YORK, Sep 5, 2007/ FW/ – Opening the New York Spring 2008 season, Nautica proposed a very generic menswear collection designed to appeal to mainstream America.
Colorful and comfortable, the whole collection will be at home in country clubs across the U.S. Though not entirely conservative because of the bright blues and yellows, even the more fashion forward pieces like the white and navy reversible poplin vest actually leans towards more on the very traditionalist fashion style.
By the way, the term ‘fashion forward’ is being used very loosely here. As most fashion pundits know, catering to mainstream America means creating clothes that are already considered ‘basic’ components of a wardrobe.
The white terry robe, the navy cotton striped boatneck sweater, the white chambray sailing shirt – these items are already staples in department stores across the country.
The collection might not be exciting in terms of fashion innovation, but it should not be taken as a bad one either. It was coherent, well edited and stayed within the boating theme the whole time.
And of course, all the models coming out bare-chested and wearing only surfing trunks during the final parade was eye candy to a predominantly female audience
