Nov 13, 2001/ FW/ --- Patricia Field's debut collection for House of Field was pre-sold
to the fashion press. As stylist and costume designer of HBO's hit show Sex and City,
everyone wanted to know what was on iconoclastic Field's mind.
Not eversince Dynasty during the 1980s has a TV show captured the imagination of fashionistas.
And with four leading ladies to dress up every week, fashion trends are born with each
episode, thanks to Patricia Field's imagination.
If someone was expecting a sample of Sex and City fashion, then they would have been
disappointed. Patricia Field showed her own brand of fashion - edgy, contemporary and sexy!
To use Godfrey Deeny's words,
"Though the occasional Seventh Avenue grouse still complains that Patricia Field
is a costumer and not really a designer, the “Sex and the City” stylist won a
rousing thumbs up for her debut collection for her House of Field line.
Designed in tandem with David Dalrymple, a former downtown nightclub dancer, the collection
was confidently American and had none of the Euro-imitative feel that inhibits many designers
in the US."
The show had a little bit of everything - from the office girl look, to a night out in town,
even going to the club, i.e., being there to dance or being the dancer herself.
The "dancer clothes" are worthy of Las Vegas and the "club clothes" are worthy of club culture
cult status.
Though it was hard for me to imagine where some of the clothes can be worn, it was easy to
see the touch of genius in their creation. Gigantic bows and one-legged pants catch the eyes.
Patricia Field is a virtuouso like Beethoven. And like Beethoven who wrote symphonies where
the drums were louder and the violins more enchanting, Patricia Field made the clothes
sexier and edgier.
