Oct 25, 2001/ FWD/ ---The rooftop of the hip Hudson Hotel in New York provided an apt
setting for the showing of Philadelphia designer Paula Hian's Spring 2002 collection. Like
the hotel, Hian's collection is upscale and chic, but with a distinct tinge of retro appeal.
Perfect for a woman who likes more than a nod towards the '60s.
Hian showed an array of cropped jackets and sleeveless A-line dresses in lambskin cut with
geometric patterns, short sleeve mini dresses with rectangle and circle appliqués, and square
or collared necklines.
"At first I took inspiration from the '60s," says the designer. "I love geometric shapes, but
then I brought in textures such as lace and denim and things mixed up a little."
There was also an edgier, raw element to many of the pieces. Looks in cotton twill and
grosgrain had frayed edges, weaves, fringing and ropey effects.
