Paula Hian: Cutting Edge

When Paula Hian was born, her parents might have missed the scissors that came with her!
The designer told Player Magazine that she had been drawing clothes and patterns since
she was two. At 10, she was already designing her own wardrobe.
Although she showed early signs of being interested in fashion, it was not until she
graduated from Northwestern University with an Art History degree that she decided
to enroll at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
And that was when she found her "cutting edge." While still a graduate student at FIT,
she won first place at the Concours International des Jeunes Créateurs de Mode Competition
in Paris, her winning design on permanent display at the Louvre.
She worked for Tahari and S.G. Gilbert before launching her own label. She went back to
Philadelphia to start her own design business and open her own stand alone boutique. That
was in 1986.
Since then, she gone from strength to strength starting with a personalized customer
service in her boutique to dressing Brooke Shields at Suddenly Susan.
