PARIS, Jan 25, 2003/ FWD/ --- The big news abuzz in Paris Wednesday night was all about Kate
Moss's rare appearance on the catwalks.
But the supermodel, who is reportedly in Thailand with a personal chef in hopes of regaining
her pre-pregnancy waifish figure, didn't appear in the flesh; instead she made her return
to the runway as a black and white photo cutout on a Philip Treacy hat during the designer's
couture show.
David Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Liza Minnelli and Elvis Presley joined the model as iconic
fixtures on top of models heads in this collection from fashion's most extraordinary hatter.
Despite only getting a surrogate Kate, the naughty show in the grandiosely velvet Pink
Palladium lap dancing club managed to attract designers Valentino, Patrick Cox, Anna Molinari
and Giovanni Bedin, who sat alongside Jean Paul Goode and socialites Tim Jeffries, Cornelia
Guest and Lucy Ferry, who donned Treacy's Klondike dog sledge cap.
Guests knocked back pink Moet as they watched Naomi strutting out in hot pants, tuxedo jacket
and a hat composed of a tiny Campbells soup tins, while Alek Wek showed off headgear composed
of scores of mini lips.
The hats that caused ripples of applause from the audience included miniature Brillo boxes
and the aforementioned Campbells soup tins, à la Andy Warhol, plus the banana from his famed
Velvet Underground album cover.
And while top catwalkers won't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day (i.e. what the lap
dancers earn in a very good month), several mannequins cavorted around the chrome poles
like seasoned pros.
