The Perfect Purse

FWD/ Aug 8, 2001/ --- The search is over, ladies: FWD has discovered the perfect handbag for each and every one of you.

But don't thank us. Thank Serge Amoruso, the Parisian bag maker who creates purses to the exact specifications of each individual. Need an extra pocket here, a zipper compartment there? Your wish is his command.

Known for his use of exotic and original skins, Amoruso spent almost ten years working at the Hermès leather atelier and another ten traveling the world and teaching the art of maroquinerie (leather working). He then returned to Paris and opened the first Serge Amoruso store in 1994 in the Marais district. With business booming, a second store was opened just over a year ago to help meet customers' demands for his one-of-a-kind items.

Drop in either store and watch the master craftsman and his team at work in the leather atelier located on the ground floor - right next to the finished products on display. With everything out in the open there is no doubt about Amoruso's commitment to deluxe quality accessories. This dedication impressed Le Printemps department store so much that, starting in September, Amoruso will be selling his accessory lines on its prestigious first floor luxury level.

"My accessories are a harmonious mix of tradition, modern style and purity," says Amoruso.

Case in point is Amoruso's top selling handbag, the Keops, which was inspired by Ancient Egypt. Clients fork out between $700 and $930 for the basic Keops bag. They then wait four to six weeks for any modifications to be made, so that the handbag perfectly matches the needs of its owner. "That, of course, costs more," says a friendly salesman.
