Susan Lazar Hatches Egg
By: Karin Nelson
March 7, 2002/ FWD/ --- After shuttering her fashion company last year, designer Susan Lazar
took a year off to work out what she wanted to do next.
After six years of making modern pieces for sophisticated, seasoned girls, Lazar was ready
to move onto something else - something she calls Egg.
Egg by Susan Lazar is a diverse design project that will eventually include Egg Home
(blankets, lighting, furniture and candles), Egg Beauty, Egg Aroma, Egg Fashion and Egg
Baby (ponchos, baby blankets, knit hats, booties and a baby bag).
The name Egg alone is a world away from ruthless world of fashion.
But it's an apt one for the professional reinvention that Lazar has enacted, one that
allows her to pursue her passion for design beyond fashion.
"It was hard for me to leave my company, but I needed a break and wanted to do something
different," she explains. "I have always had an interest in lifestyle and interior design."
So are there similarities between the now-defunct Susan Lazar, and Egg?
"I would say there are similarities. Integrity of design, good quality and the idea of
modernity are the principles I think of when designing," says Lazar. "I tried with Susan
Lazar sportswear to apply these ideals, as I will with Egg."
The difference, she notes, is that "Egg reflects how I am today."
The first product to hatch from Egg will be baby and adult blankets in cashmere, wool
and cotton.
The luxurious throws bear a modern zodiac sign or symbol, and a personalized nametag and
astrological description.
The brand itself is certainly symbolic for Lazar. "Egg is all about rebirth. I design for
modern women like myself. I am my own customer," she says. "I always want to find something
special, modern -- yet I never want it to be trendy. This is where the organic naturalness
comes in. It's a delicate balance."
There is a maternal instinct evident in Lazar's new line, too, especially in that balance
between modern design and natural beauty: "I would love to have children. I believe our
greatest gift is to create -- what could be higher than creating a human life, so perhaps."
But for the moment, Lazar just wants to enjoy building Egg. "There is a lot of work to be
done," she says.
Egg by Susan Lazar will be available at Henri Bendel beginning in May.
