Feb 9, 2002/ FW/ --- All American designer Tommy Hilfiger kicked New York Fashion Week last Friday
with his show at Bryant Park.
As the first show of New York Fashion Week, Tommy Hilfiger's Fall 2002 collection set the
tone of what is to come.
The mood was naval and uniform-like, but never militant.
His baggy jeans and bulky parkas gave way to plush fabrics and a trimmer, more sophisticated
silhouettes in an explosion of autumnal shades.
Models breezed down the runway in suits and blazers but this season, there was a twist.
Closer fitting jackets with flared trousers harkened back to the 70's (as did the classic rock
soundtrack that played).
"New England, with its tradition-rich heritage, is the vision," said the designer in his
program notes.
The Atlantic state tradition came through in preppie toggle coats, argyle
sweaters and varsity jackets updated with down vests. He sent out a number of clever pants,
especially one great pair of trousers with a corduroy front and denim back.
Three piece suits showed that the casual workday may be in jeapardy of dressing up a bit.
But not too much as corduroy figured prominently as the fabric of choice for suits and coats.
And in brilliant shades of rust, orange, and marigold, the corduroy pieces were the show's
standouts.
Also worth noting was Hilfiger's way of mixing things up.
Strong examples were the red tracksuit paired with a wool trenchcoat and
tuxedo trousers worn with a zip-front sweatshirt and leather baseball
jacket.
These combinations may sound less than appealing, but they somehow worked. And they worked
very well.
If you like your sophistication easy, then Hilfiger is the designer for you.
