DALLAS, Nov 21, 2003/ FW/ --- They don’t do kung fu nor go to dangerous missions like Charlie’s Angels. But, be rest assured, the Victoria’s Secrets Angels are as beautiful and curvaceous as Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, including Demi Moore.
Instead, the Victoria’s Secrets Angels walk on the runway and grace magazine covers.
Their mission: to sell fashion and beauty products.
So, they might not be able to fly helicopters or do the John Woo effect on their movements. But they do have distinctive walks and that is what makes them stars.
Giselle Bundchen, Heidi Klum, Karolina Kurkova, Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell rule the fashion world, not the box office. Mention their names to any fashionista and you will see twinkles in their eyes for name recognition.
Gisele Bundchen is the reigning runway queen, gracing all the top fashion shows from New York to Paris. Born in Brazil on July 20, 1980, she has been modeling at the Big Apple since 1996.
She has been the face of a variety of advertising campaigns including Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni, Versace, Versace Jeans, Versace Sport, Céline, Givenchy, Bulgari and Polo Jeans. Gisele has also appeared in campaigns for Guerlain's "Champs-Elysées" fragrance, as well as for Lanvin's "Oxygène" fragrance. Gisele has also served as the spokesperson and campaign model for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.
Born May 20, 1970, Naomi Campbell has proven several times over her staying power in the fashion industry where youth is put in such a premium. Though most of her peers had retired from modeling, she has stayed on, continuing to model for the top fashion houses in the world. Her name and her face is one of the most recognizable in the industry.
Heidi Klum was born in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany on June 1, 1973. She got her break in the modeling world the old fashion way – she won a contest, “Model 92”.
She made her breakthrough in 1998 as the cover girl of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue and calendar.
Heidi's career is also taking new directions. She made her acting debut appearing as Michael J. Fox's love interest in the ABC hit sitcom "Spin City," and her film credits include "Blow Dry," "Ella Enchanted" and the upcoming cable movie "The Life & Death of Peter Sellers."
Heidi has also appeared in guest roles on "Sex and the City," "CSI: Miami," "Malcolm in the Middle" and "The Larry Sanders Show."
Tyra Banks took Paris by storm at the tender age of 17. A California native, (born Dec. 4, 1973), she walked the runway for almost all of the prestigious fashion houses in New York, Paris and Milan.
She is as talented as she is beautiful. In 1991, she made her first music video "Black or White," by Michael Jackson. Starting in 1992, she has also tried her hand in acting, landing a recurring role on “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in 1994.
She was the first African-American model who made the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue and she did it twice, in 1996 and 1997.
Her latest project is “America’s Top Model,” a reality show based on how to make it in the fashion industry. It was shown in UPN last January, and it will have its second season at the same network in January 2004.
Born in 1984 in Decin, Czechoslovakia, Karolina Kurkova is Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite model of the moment. At 16, she was gracing the runways of Europe and the Americas, and has been shot by power photographers like Patrick Demarchelier and Irving Penn. Three years in the industry, and she is already classified as one of the top models.
Another Brazilian, Adriana Lima was born in 1982 in Salvador, Brazil. Her rise to fame occurred after placing second in the Ford Supermodel of the World Contest (after having won the 1996 Ford Supermodel of Brazil Contest).
