Wink by Wynn Smith: "Kalifornia"

Sep 27, 2001/ FW/ --- Wynn Smith's Wink Spring 2002 collection reminded of "Kalifornia"
a bad movie starring Brad Pitt (pre-Interview With the Vampire) and Juliette Lewis (after her Cape Fear fame).
Technically, it was not a B movie. After all, all the stars went to do bigger and better things. David
Duchovny even played a supporting role (this is before he did X-Files).
So, what was so bad about this movie? The actors are talented enough, as history proved it. But the
storyline just did not click!
So was this collection. Wynn Smith has talent, there is no question about that. And history will prove it
that he has what it takes. But this collection is a poor representation of what the designer can do.
Shapless gauzy smocks? Early evening gowns that would look better as nightgowns? I can see references to the
1960s and early 1970s California, the height of flower power and Make Love Not War movement. But, that vision
never solidified.
The collection is wearable, the question is... where to wear it? Where art thou Wynn Smith?
