NEW YORK, Sep 12, 2004 / FW/ --- When designer Zang Toi does something, he never does it halfway. He always makes his best better and that is exactly what he did yesterday when he presented his Spring 2005 collection.
Debuting a capsule collection of his diffusion line “Toi House” which will be available at Nordstrom stores nationwide next March, Zang Toi proved that he has his finger on the pulse of the youth market, sending mini skirts and body-hugging shirts which will be surefire favorites among the Gen I and Gen Y groups.
His hip hugging Capri-length jeans, flounce minis and sequined stretch tulle short sleeves tees expanded his target market to include the hip hop crowd that wants intricate detailing and high fashion elegance in their wardrobes.
Though the Toi House collection was definitely outstanding, Zang Toi excelled the most with his eponymous line.
With “Summer of ‘42” as background music, Zang Toi opened with a platinum knit goddess gown, setting the tone to the collection which is all about the “cool, elegant waspy looks of the rich and famous” as he promised in his press notes.
The audience immediately gave an applause that can make someone who was just listening in that this was the finale and not the opening by the sound of the clapping.
To say that this collection got me at hello will be an understatement. The handkerchief linen halter gown, the Caribbean sky blue silk satin organza “Princess of Wales” gown and the black textured silk satin “Starlet” gown with beaded black English rose medallion --- all of them are worthy of a red carpet appearance or a placement in a movie.
Yet, just discussing the gowns will be incomplete. Zang Toi created a whole wardrobe for his clients, from daywear to eveningwear. He dressed them for board meetings, lunch appointments and tea parties.
Platinum snakeskin skirts, bustier and jackets, generously cut seamless trousers, hip hugging flat fronted pants with fringes will be a great addition to any woman’s wardrobe.
Commenting on the complete woman’s wardrobe for his Spring 2005 collection, Zang Toi said, “I always design a complete wardrobe for my clients. When I go to trunk shows, the ladies do not just buy one or two pieces. They want to be dressed for morning, noon and night.”
Zang Toi who travels all over the country to meet his clients for trunk shows and fittings has a personal relationship with his loyal following. His success a designer lies with two things – his very beautiful and wearable creations and his ability to anticipate the needs of his clients.
