Alexander McQueen: Harry Potter Grows Up

PARIS, Jun 30, 2005/ FW/ --- This season, Alexander McQueen put the young English magician in the Ottoman Empire with his summer suits to morph into the mythological phoenix.

Perhaps, its McQueen’s take on the popular book and movie series Harry Potter, written by a fellow British. The rounded glasses and gray trench on a model wearing feathers can easily be imagined as Harry Potter in his 20s.

The background can throw one off though. With opened parachutes as backdrop, one would expect militaristic looks.

Yet, one of Alexander McQueen’s greatest strengths is his unpredictability, so, it is not surprising that the parachutes was just part of a fantasy.

However, some fashion reviewers might view this as discordant, even unneeded. Still, when you deal with the fantasy world, everything is possible and everything can make sense, no matter how dissonant it looks at first glance.

Take the Harry Potter series for instance. The setting is modern day London. Yet in the middle of the train station, there is an unseen platform, the door to the magical world of Harry Potter.

So, if Alexander McQueen decides to dabble into a little fantasy, it’s all forgiven and accepted. After all, the silhouettes shown are still signature well-tailored McQueen, that can easily find their way into the young 20-something and 30-something wardrobes.

And how can anyone turn his back to the loose fitting suit jackets paired with red sailor stripe shirt embellished with an anchor.

Or the long-sleeved summer sweater decorated with sailor motifs, a definite must-have from this collection.

And maybe, just maybe, when the fictional Harry Potter reaches his 20s, he will actually visit the Alexander McQueen shop in modern day London.
