NEW YORK, Feb 8, 2004/ FW/ --- Inspired by the art nouveau movement (circa 1890-1914) Alice Roi’s return to Bryant Park gave a hint of yearning for those dynamic years when a brilliant and energetic generation of artists and designers sought to fashion an art form appropriate to the modern age.
And like the era that inspired it, the collection showed a wide array of contradictory images and ideas, with both structured and flowing silhouettes featured in the 36 exits shown.
And that is where the energy of the collection lay, the same way that the art nouveau movement’s strength emanated from diverging ideas.
During this extraordinary time of the art nouveau movement, urban life as we now understands it was established. Old customs, habits, and artistic styles sat alongside new.
And thought it might be pure coincidence, Alice Roi’s growth as a designer was also defined by the collection, the same way that the art nouveau movement paved the way of new styles in visual arts for the 20th century.
The collection has its quirkiness, the style we have always seen on Alice Roi’s designs. Added to it is subtlety and restraint, a sign that the young designer is growing and expanding in her chosen art form.
