Be Roi. Be Young.

New York, Feb 11, 2001/ FWD/ --- From Madness and Eurythmics to Dexy's Midnight Runners, '80s music bombarded editors and buyers on Sunday morning as they waited for Alice Roi's Fall 2001 show to begin. The music was a good indicator of what to expect. Like last season, Roi concentrated on the greed-is-good decade. The only difference: This time, the '80s rock princess was all grown up.

Roi opened her collection with sedate butter-colored printed Dolman silk dresses, so short they barely covered the models' privates. Then came white chiffon suspender tops, camel wool pants, and black asymmetrical puff-sleeved sweaters over wool sailor palazzo pants.

In a nod to color, Roi showed a group of vivid dresses, pants and suits in canary yellow, lilac and electric blue mixed with black. These were clothes with big shoulders and big buttons, tongue-in-cheek spin-offs of the costume-y creations of French couture houses. That's clearly also where Roi found inspiration for her high-collared, architectural blouses and structured sleeveless suits with white piping.

Parody was what came to mind when Roi sent down the runway dresses with chiffon sleeves hanging loosely, like wings, or miniskirts and pants with flaps. Her braided suspenders and halters on sweaters and dresses, however, looked out of place.

That Roi is inspired by the '80s works for her only because she knows when to leave the decade behind: Her minis could have been ruffled and her pants high-waisted, yet she keeps them simple and tight, and she probably makes the lowest hip-huggers around.
