Alice Roi: Tapestry of Themes
Written by: Tanya Jensen

Nov 6, 2001/ FWD/ --- Alice Roi built her Spring 2002 show around three transposable, interweaving themes: Pilgrim, Amish Chic and Hard Candy Stripe. She opened with Amish style dresses in silk voile with shredded grosgrain detailing, the traditional Amish look being broken up by oatmeal baseball caps and black leather high top sneakers.

The show continued with lace skirts and dresses featuring paneling, layering and padding (built in cummerbunds in neutral shades of navy, white and nude). The shapes may have been conventional -- but features such as sheer fabrics, cut-out gowns and windows in tops definitely were not.

The Pilgrim influence showed up in pinstripes, checks, quilting and subtle prints. The silhouettes were easy and flowing, but at the same time hardened by bolero jackets and heavy cotton shirting.

As with Roi’s fall collection, there were extravagant high collared puff sleeved blouses with heavy buttons and shredded cuffs. They teamed perfectly with Roi’s ivory silk weave and gauze pants, which, as usual, fit stunningly.

Color ebbed into the show with knee length dresses, girly camisoles and tiered minis in the palest of lemon, pink, and blue.

As technically proficient and complicated as the collection was, the pieces were eminently wearable -- which, in the end, is what made it so successful.
