NEW YORK, Feb 5, 2005/ FW/ --- At the Christie’s Building last night, Anand Jon’s Fall 2005 collection bore the mark of his signature Indo-chic looks while also demonstrating his growth as a designer after a long absence from 7th On Sixth’s official calendar for the past several years.
Using the sari, India’s traditional woman’s costume, as the template, Anand Jon transformed it into very sexy silhouettes in navel-baring spaghetti straps tops and bustiers while retaining the flowing skirts that reach down the floor.
Intricate beading and/or embroidery adorned the garments and if these detailing does not exist, lace was used as the main material to give it a very sumptuous look.
Just for fun, Anand Jon also sent out delicate slip dresses and contemporary gown designs that continued the fluid shape of the modernized saris. When the Indian-born designer chose to give it a more structured look, thigh high slits were used to give it a very sensual look.
The sari gowns might be luxuriously fluid, but the show, unfortunately was not. Anand Jon also showed denim and menswear that instead of adding to the show, it took away from it.
The flow was literally stumped, as each denim outfit and/or menswear was interspersed with the gowns. The denim line and the menswear could have been easily edited out and no one would even notice.
To fair though, Anand Jon might have not had any choice but to put them because his runway show was being held in conjunction with the Tsunami Relief Victim Benefit for India. In fact, there were very few journalists at his show, and most of the guests were well-heeled New Yorkers who would have been asked to open their pocketbooks later in the evening to help a worthy cause.
Nevertheless, the audience would have enjoyed the show better if it were better edited too.
