Anand Jon: Indo-chic Takes Center Stage

Oct 24, 2001/ FW/ --- Anand Jon was scheduled to show at the Buddha Bar in downtown Manhattan on that fateful day of September 11.

Since the terrorist attack happened early in the morning, it was a blessing that the designer and his crew were still uptown, getting ready for the show. A lot of their invited guests emailed them inquiring about their safety (yours truly included), that Anand Jon, through Sanjana had to email all of us back telling us that all of them were safe.

A little over a month later, Anand Jon's Spring 2002 collection was unveiled at the Armani showroom in midtown Manhattan. And this was a show that FashionWindows will not miss!

I like his designs personally. I'm a fan of Indo-chic. Maybe it's the mystical element. Mainly its because of the way Anand Jon interprets Indian symbolism.

Another reason is a good friend of mine Mahesh Ram (whom I used to work for also) is a family friend of Anand Jon. Mahesh is a techie, just like me, and he is not interested in fashion at all. But when he realized that FashionWindows cover Anand Jon's shows, he faithfully visits this website every season to see how his friend Anand is doing. It's a small world after all!

And this was a show that my friend Mahesh would like! For me, the wait of over a month was worth it! Once again, Anand Jon stick to what he knows best - a collection meant for Ceylon maidens to the modern woman. And the designer could really put up a show!

For the modern woman, Anand Jon sent out generously cut pants paired with transparent tops decorated with Indian inspired embroidery. For those hot summer nights, sleeveless slim fitting blouses, again with exotic embroidery.

Mini skirts and assymetrical hemlines dominated the daywear. A red mini skirt in leather with matching bare midriff top with a V-neckline worn by Paris Hilton looked very sexy.

A low waisted jean was worn by Jade Barrymoore (Drew's mother) matched with a sleeveless fitted shirt would be a very practical addition to a busy woman's wardrobe.

Anand Jon's brilliance shone through at the eveningwear portion of the show. From one-shoulder to floor length gowns to bare shoulder assymetrical hemlines delighted his fans. As always, the designer used luxurious fabrics and was very generous in cutting the material. The models looked like they were floating when they walked!

It is really hard to choose which one is the best gown, but my favorite was worn by Paris Hilton again! A flowing black floorlength skirt matched with a short-cropped long sleeve jacket with a neo-Nehru collar is something you could wear to any party or the theater.

A great collection! The only downside of this collection is that you have to be physically fit to wear them. Better get to the gym if you want to wear Anand Jon next Spring!
