With runways for the last few seasons flooded with the girlie look, this really should have
been a great season for Anna Sui, who's been trumpeting the boho look year-in year-out. But
it wasn't.
Her Fall 2001 collection - while it had its moments, with excellent one-off pieces
and looks - was spotty.
This season, Anna's girl has moved on from the Mudd Club - when she took a detour into a down
and dirty punk look - to a technicolor pop world of bold colors, stripes and patterns.
There
was something of a '60s DIY prom couture feeling to the whole collection, with Sui once again
raiding vintage and thrift stores for inspiration.
But Sui's overuse of Flower Power and paisley
prints in near-neon colors - with some graphic windowpane patterns thrown in for good measure -
made for an overwhelming display, too mired in the past.
Some outfits worked well, like a fun and perky lime green trompe-l'oeil knit dress that had the
outline of seams and belts in blue.
A simple black dress encrusted with pink and red silk beads
had just the right amount of ornamentation, and worn with a black silk coat with simple
floral-patterned beads it looked superb.
Also strong and wearable was a range of varsity-striped
scarves, tops and cardigans in candy colors, and some fresh, fun crushed black patent leather
jackets.
