Arkadius: Back to His Roots

London, Sep 19, 2001/ FW/ --- Known for his wearable art designs, Arkadius went back to his
roots with his "Virgin Mary Wears the Trousers" show last Monday.
A playful play on the Catholic Church (I assume, since Arkadius is Polish and Pope John Paul II is also
Polish), the designer gave his audience what they expect - a lot of drama that is sometimes funny
and sometimes, somewhat shocking.
Although most of the pieces of the collection were wearable art, Arkadius did not forget the bottom line
by presenting some pieces that can actually be worn! Slick trousers, applique vests and jackets and pencil cut
skirts.
The most dramatic piece was a model dressed like a framed photo of the Virgin Mary, complete with gold crown
and gold veil, almost like a Russian icon. And in keeping with the religous theme, accessories and
embellishments were rosary beads and crosses.
The background on the runway was a wall of cherubins that actually look more like babies than little angels.
Nevertheless, it gave the proper effect.
With this collection, Arkadius showed that he is trying to find the proper balance with art and commerce.
