Arkadius: Hints of the Big Apple

LONDON, Sep 20, 2003/ FW/ --- Just as the ten year anniversary of Bryant Park being hosts to London fashion week ended, the British capital started what will be a five day stretch of hopefully the UK’s finest.
Yet, despite the apparent lack of international media as seats failed to be filled,
the first day of RTW 2004 spring summer showcased a cocktail of lovely conservative to
out there and unfortunately banal political statements by the Polish explosion Arkadius.
Red, white and blue, American stars and stripes, the theme for his collection.
As he left the US, (Arkadius showed in London last season), he obviously packed accordingly,
not forgetting pieces of the big apple as souvenirs in his suitcase.
Models with painted faces looked to represent in some way Indians and large dollars
wrapped waists as baggy balloon style pants.
The Jewish community of London however, may question his hinting use at the Jewish Star spread
between pants, shirts and jackets, no matter how proud they might be, but then again it
may just become a new marketable money making symbol, the dollar and the Jewish star in
a dance towards commercialisation as symbols of London’s reconstruction.
Mini dresses, mini skirts and lets not forget mini shorts but with maxi hoods...a collection
that is definitely not for the ‘shapely’.
Transparency for a hint of sexiness and vague feminity, along with designer rips
that were then pieced back together were common uses of fabrics for skirts, pants and jeans,
on jackets and dresses.
A white feather collared evening dress with pieces of red flowing from the bust as two
peace doves joined at the neck was memorable, along with the Statue of Liberty circling
the body with the American flag, not necessarily in a positive way, but memorable.
You be the judge.
