Badgley Mischka Delivers -- for the Socialite Set

NEW YORK, Feb 14, 2002/ FWD/ --- After sitting last season out, design duo Badgley Mischka presented their fall 2002 collection this afternoon in a showroom jam-packed with editors and socialites - Louis Vuitton handbags in one hand, lattes from the Starbucks downstairs in the other - eager to ogle the beaded, spangled, crystal-covered, ruffled, flounced, embroidered, feathered and mink-trimmed eveningwear.

The collection was clearly aimed at the ladies-who-lunch in the crowd rather than mavens of the boardroom.

Although there were a couple well-cut suits in the collection, their ruffled or ribboned accents would be too much for even the well-heeled working girl.

For the red carpet and charity ball set, however, the latest Badgley Mischka offerings should work just fine.

Black crepe gowns, some with cutaway (and of course beaded) backs, lace cocktail dresses and an elegant tuxedo pantsuit all fit the bill for modern elegance and glamour.

However, those considering over the top pieces - like a dress overwhelmed by organza ribbons and beluga beading or the lace gown adorned with feather ring embroidery that resembled locks of human hair - should take a lesson from Rachel Griffiths' Golden Globes fashion disaster and think twice.

A Siamese red lace blouse, brocade jacket with gold bullion, and black faille and satin "Czarina" gown were a step in a different and refreshing direction for these masters of the slinky beaded sheath.

They went a little too far on this path, however, with their ivory satin embroidered jacket.

Paired with flowing pants and tied with a sash, it was much more appropriate for the bedroom than the ballroom.

For those of a flirtier nature, several cocktail numbers stood out for their vintage feel.

An ivory and black lace tiered dress, with a thin belt and crystal and wood beads, offered a refreshing retro sensibility, as did a polka dot georgette gown.
