Badgley Mischka's Midas Touch

New York, April 30, 2001/FWD/ --- When Mark Badgley and James Mischka set out to make a beautiful evening gown, they look to glamour icons like Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe for inspiration. That same inspiration rang loud and true at the presentation of the duo's Spring 2002 bridal collection, shown yesterday in their New York showroom.

The collection leaned heavily towards the eveningwear look for which Badgley Mischka has become so renowned. But while they echoed current couture trends, these bridal gowns were imbued with an almost royal feel thanks to intricate touches of beading, embroidery, feathers and lace.

Badgley Mischka is best known for focusing on the fit and balance of the dress. Applying that same expertise to their bridal gowns, the show featured dresses that were as elegant in their simplicity as they were rich in their adornments. From the straight and slinky silhouettes of the Alisa and Ava gowns, to the fuller skirts of the Arlee and Ainsley gowns, the effect was one of effortless grace.

The simplicity of the dress shapes contrasted with - and complimented - the heavy detailing on the gowns. Off the shoulder boned, lace-up bodices glistened and glimmered with beading and were paired with elegant skirts. Silk gowns boasted layers of lace, glass beads and delicate lace cap sleeves. The Andrea gown was a gorgeous surprise in a dark ivory littered with tiny feathers and crystal and pearl beading.

The trains also struck a balance between simple and stunning. Designed with the shape of a woman's body in mind, the swathes of fabric stemmed from just beneath the curve of the back and swept one to two feet behind the dress. Instead of a distraction, these trains were literal extensions of the gowns.

In the end, setting aside the obvious merits of the team's craftsmanship and the awed response of the crown, Badgley Mischka did just what bridal designers are supposed to: make your feet itch to walk down that aisle.
