New York, Feb 12, 2001/ Fashion Wire Daily©/ -- At this season's runway show of designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka - always a feast for
photographers and camera crews because of their celebrity clientele - Jennifer Love Hewitt, Tori
Spelling and her mother were bombarded by a wall of photographers, dangling mics and reporters.
It was so overwhelming that at one point Spelling put her hands in front of her face, desperately
trying to signal she was done pontificating on fashion. Before long, a wall of bouncers barricaded
Hewitt, Spelling and her mother from further media intrusion.
Perhaps they should have worn pieces from the fall collection, which picked up on the touch chic
theme that emerged last spring. With broad-shouldered leather jackets and cleaned-up goth skirts
with chunky belts, Badgley Mischka's woman is going for a harder - but still elegant - edge this
season.
According to the program notes, the collection was about "New York the way it was when
[the designers] first moved here, when everything was possible." Clearly, they must have moved
to New York sometime in the '80s. Eighties punk and New Wave tunes like "Warm Leatherette"
were chosen to usher in dresses with strips of studded leather, off-the-shoulder black leather
tops and skirts, and countless black and crimson satin pleated dresses. For a softer touch, the
duo sent out shapeless floaty chiffon dresses and satin dresses with quilted treatments.
But even if things have gotten harder at Badgley Mischka, the designers haven't forgotten the
sumptuous beaded eveningwear for which they're known. Moving on from the mini shirtdresses of
last season, they put their baubles on pleasing, grown-up tops tied at the shoulder and slinky
cowled minidresses in a shimmering amethyst.
The proceedings clearly weren't for the younger society set, however, as bad girls Paris and
Nicky Hilton, dressed in a Gucci-logoed visor and John Galliano printed sweater, appeared
distracted, yawning incessantly until the end.
