New York, Feb 9, 2001/FWD/ --- Recession? What recession? shouted Max Azria's
men's collection for BCBG Friday evening.
Wall Street may have closed broadly lower yesterday, but the mood on the Bryant Park catwalk
was definitely up.
Azria's entire Fall/Winter 2001 collection had a cocky casual attitude. These are clothes made
for the type of guy who walks from his swinging shoulders down, enjoying life in rugged luxury.
The collection worked best when Max kept things simple - black wool twill bias jackets, dashing
3/4 length chamois shearlings, or some great loose corduroy pinstripe redingotes and some of
the best leather pants seen anywhere this season (on either side of the pond).
The BCBG silhouette is a mite too boxy, but then again his clientele probably spends copious
amounts of time buffing themselves in the gym.
Max also has a great eye for detailing, like neat shoulder pockets on crewnecks or diagonal
plackets on men's pants that will be widely copied.
Some looks, however, positively jarred. Two-button cranberry satin suits worn with cognac
silk shirts caused several critics to grimace, while copper-colored Lurex jackets could only
be worn by the game show host of a particularly obscure cable channel.
But overall, the quality of the clothes and self-assured attitude made for a fine collection.
