Boudicca: East Meets West

Zowie Broach and Brian Kirkby named their label after the Queen of Iceni, Boudicca (died 61 A.D.)
who led a revolt against the Roman Empire on British soil.
Boudicca is a legend in British
history - a woman leading a rebellion against the powerful Roman Empire.
Whether it was a love for history or because both Broach and Kirkby wanted their designs to be
the embodiment of the 21st century woman, the clothes on the runway portray both edginess and
feminenity that today's women would definitely appreciate.
For Spring 2001, it's not surprising to see the collection based on history, though not
necessarily English.
Taking some inspiration from 16th century Japan, the duo sent a modernized Japanese kimono
and left the obi off-center.
And from China, when bindings was still in vogue, a tube-top which "bound" the model's breast,
and a white shirt dress, again, the model's breasts "bound" by a piece of cloth.
The influences were eclectic.
There was even a touch of American west.
But there is one recurring theme - these are strong women, like Boudicca, their namesake,
who was willing to take up the sword to defend her kingdom.
