Carmen Marc Valvo: "Sunset on the Serengeti"
By Boyd Davis
Photos by Visko Hatfield
A consummate traveler, Carmen Marc Valvo gets design inspirations from his impressions of
the places he visits.
Meticulous and known for his attention to details, Carmen Marc Valvo is both an artist and
craftsman. He is a master tailor who could translate his design ideas into a reality.
He believes that the dress should be able to speak for itself, and beautiful in its own right
without the help of accessories. He also like to add unexpected twists in the design, making
the clothes interesting and as a result, making its own statement.
For Fall 2000, Carmen Marc Valvo was inspired by the Serengeti Africa. Located in Tanzania,
Serengeti is the largest national park in that country and it means "endless plains"
Maasai language.
The Serengeti is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and Carmen Marc
Valvo based his color pallette for his Fall 2000 collection from the stunning natural
colors of the preserve and the wildlife that inhabits it.
Even the background for the show was based on the burnt-orange African sunset.
With the clothes color pallette based on the locale, it stood out on the runway. Evening clothes
and daywear paraded the runway. Prints were based on the animal life, but the collection
did not look like an urban safari.
A master of tailoring techniques, the clothes draped very nicely on the models. A definite
winner this season.
