NEW YORK, Apr 16, 2007 / FW --- One of the most sought after New York designers, Catherine Malandrino had gone from strength to strength since she launched her eponymous label in 1999. Originally known for her ‘rock chic’ style, the French-born designer is creating a new design code for her house – sophisticated allure and very cosmopolitan.
The change was subtle, almost unnoticeable, except that during the Fall 2006, Malandrino forayed into demi couture, adding couture elements to her sharply tailored dresses, gowns and coats.
Last spring, in a collection of mini dresses that ranged from daywear to eveningwear, the soft silhouettes dominated to a collection meant for the metro girl on the go.
And this season, for Fall 2007, she combined French aesthetics to a collection that converged silhouettes from the 1920s and 1980s, resulting to a new vision that has not been seen before.
Tunics in oversized houndstooth prints or in solid can easily become a shell for a different look when layered with the coats or knitted double-breasted jacket with oversized collars.
Sweater dresses with mutton sleeves or half-standing collar both with buttons in front that ran from the neck to the hemline can be worn alone or layered with another piece from the collection.
Versatility is the key for Malandrino’s daywear wherein skirts rolled at the hem, or blouson dresses with a wide band at the bottom came in black, white, purple and shocking pink.
Eveningwear came into lengths – minis or gowns, which were adorned with ruffles or ostrich feathers.
Still, Malandrino did not forget her ‘rock chic’ roots with the micro mini cocktail dresses in raglan sleeves paired with dark hose.
