Chaiken: Simply Sophisticated

Dec 22, 2001/ FWD/ ---In past collections, Chaiken designer Jeff Mahshie has made simple,
sophisticated tailoring the label's trademark and message. And his Spring/Summer 2002 line, shown
in New York, was no exception.
The sleek, form fitting trouser suits that came down the runway, for instance, were at first deceptively
plain. But the details - like a thigh high slit in the pants, a buckled waistband, a side lacing bustier
and, of course, killer heels - set them apart from the pack. Similarly, a striped cotton morning suit
seemed traditional - aside from the body-hugging fit, that is.
Luxurious wide-legged satin pants were teamed with simple Lycra tanks, and silk jersey halters and lace
camisoles softened wool and ultra suede minis. The fencing jackets in silk satin and quilted cotton appealed
to the crowd that included Chaiken faithfuls John Bartlett and Kevin Bacon.
There were less formalized pieces in the collection, as well, like chiffon velvet halters, sheaths and tanks
with drawstrings. And the color palette of white, black, navy and egg yolk yellow was fittingly subdued for
the delicately tailored collection.
Things did take on an edgier feel towards the end of the show, however, with python jackets and trousers,
short lace skirts and sequin sheaths. But nothing overwhelmed the directness of the collection.
Without having to fall back on surprises or theatrics, Chaiken once again proved their classic,
modern wearability and diverse appeal.
