PARIS, Jan 31, 2006/ FW/ --- The backdrop said it all, a giant engraving of Arles, the medieval city in Provence, France, the conurbation of festival, art and culture where Van Gogh once painted. This was also Christian Lacroix’s roots for his design aesthetics, and this season, the French designer made a triumphant return that also marked a new beginning as he celebrates his 20th year in fashion.

Arles was featured strongly in the collection, beginning with Lily Cole opening the show in red day dress with ruffled hemline and sleeves. Matador inspired jackets followed it. After all, up to today ferias or bull runs and bullfights are held in this very same arena (12,000 seats) that was the scene of the Roman games in the first century.

The Roman Gaul influence was also seen, with the exquisite headdresses and bows on the hair. But it was the flowers of Provence that gave the collection its delicate beauty.

Done in lace or prints on fabric, the flowers gave a restrained exuberance, just on the surface giving a glimpse of what is underneath.

Even the butterflies made it, this time beaded on tulle, their subtle colors highlighted with tiny Swarovski crystals.

The silhouettes were slim, except for a few pieces where volume was added by using ruffles and sheering. The shoulder was emphasized by soft sloping sleeves or going off the shoulder.

It was so delightfully beautiful that when the bride (the final look) came out, the audience applauded. When Christian Lacroix came out to take his bow, he received a standing ovation while red carnations were flung on the runway.

The matador has taken the bull by the horn, and won!
