NEW YORK, Feb 14, 2002/ FW/ --- Custo Barcelona's Fall 2002 collection was a young and
spirited mix of texture and graphic design.
Designer Custo Dalmau stuck to his signature prints, but this time around he imbued them
with a new level of sophistication in cut and style and applied a more subdued color palette.
Introducing it's first full menswear line to accompany it's existing womenswear,
the company's theme of fusing "culture, community, freedom, and fashion" was evident in
the urban edge of the show.
"Fall 2002 is heavily influenced by '70s street style. There is a lot of denim, leather and
patchwork, but the techniques are sophisticated," Dalmau explained backstage
"We have used approaches such as bricking, where squares of fabric are stacked in various
combinations; we have weaved metallic thread through fabrics which gives an iridescent look.
And there is a lot of printing and laminating on the leather pieces."
For men, he prints came directly from colored passports and European maps.
For women, denim skirts and jeans got hip with 70's-style patchwork.
Jackets were deconstructed.
Various printing techniques resulted in pop-art flavored t-shirts and trousers covered
in graffiti, photo-prints, and cartoons.
For men, much of the same treatments were used.
Canvas and corduroy were staple fabrics and silhouettes ranged from wide legged pants to modified peacoats.
Custo Barcelona proved itself not for the shy and demure so it minimalism is your thing, beware.
