PARIS, Jan 20, 2004/ FW/ --- Yesterday was just the first day of the season, yet the excitement is already full blown with John Galliano’s Dior show held at the Polo de Paris.
Galliano who had taken the fashion flock all over the world with his exuberant designs took a trip through time, several thousand years in fact, to the land of the Pharaohs, and brought its magic and all its riches.
From gold to silver then myrrh, including hieroglyphics and kohl, which by the way, the ancient Egyptians invented, John Galliano wove them into an opulent collection worthy of Cleopatra herself.
He even had time to give us a mummy, delectable though, and not scary at all. Gauzelike material encrusted with jewelry and crystal wrapped a model’s body. It was so beautiful that the audience burst into applause.
As if the clothes were not enough, John Galliano’s headpieces were also a sight to behold, and can be works of art on their own right.
From King Tut to the legends and myths of ancient Egypt, John Galliano did not spare anything in terms of creativity.
Amidst this extravaganza, the designer even found time to make accessories that will surely sell.
From the golden bags to the “roped” shoes, the beetle brooches and earrings, those of us mere mortals who cannot afford the clothes will have to satisfy our need for Dior with these pretty little things.
Magnificent will be an understatement to describe this collection. Even if we come out with a list of superlatives to choose from, one word will not be enough.
Ah, where is Merriam-Webster when you need them?
