Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring 2006: ‘Liberty, Equality, Fraternity’ The Catwalk Turns Revolutionary

PARIS, Jan 24, 2006/ FW/ --- Maybe it is the sign of the times, as the world goes deeper into the third millennium that everyone, including fashion houses are going back to its roots. And perhaps for John Galliano, the roots of Christian Dior go as far back as the French revolution.

With 1789 tattooed on the skin of a model wearing red quilted pants decorated with tiny buttons and long thin ribbons paired with a jacket with an obi-sized belt, her face all white, her eyes eerily made up with black eyeliner and white eye-shadow, the symbolism of the bloody French revolution at the end of the 18th century was all there.

With the press notes proclaiming, ‘Red is the new libertine… Dior is the new erotica,’ the promised blood and gore with a touch of bondage were fulfilled by Galliano sending models wearing red gowns cut tight at the bodice flaring at the hips with bare legs playing peek-a-boo as she walked.

Yet, it was also Christian Dior as the gowns turned into yards and yards of silk and tulle with intricate embroidery albeit decreeing the mantra of the French revolution.

No matter what, as each exit passed, one can easily imagine it translated into something wearable, and of course sellable.

Of course, Christian Dior is doing well. Two weeks ago, it released its financial statement, posting 2005 revenue at EUR 663 million, representing 11% growth at current exchange rates, and 11% organic sales growth. Its fourth quarter revenues showed 12% growth at 183 million euros.

The Christian Dior show might have been all drama, with a lot of pieces more for the museum than a woman’s wardrobe.

Nevertheless, do not doubt that John Galliano won this one! He did not take any prisoners either. Everyone in the audience including rising stars Mischa Barton and Monica Cruz were more than impressed.
