MILAN, Feb 24, 2005/ FW/ --- From 17th century Europe all through 19th century America, the bloomers had been considered women’s underwear. It was only during the 20th century that it literally saw the light of day. And for the 21st century, Giorgio Armani proposes that it become a part of everyday dressing for women.
To the surprise of many, the Italian design master did not present a single pair of pants for his Fall 2005 collection for his eponymous line. The fact that it was sorely missed reinforces the fact that women all over the world had come to rely on Giorgio Armani for their pantsuits.
Presenting at least two scores of bloomers, from taffeta to velvet, and pairing them with suit jackets, which by the way, were signature Armani tailoring, the message was clear – “show your legs women of all ages.” If you’ve got it, flaunt it!
Maybe, it’s Giorgio Armani’s way to liberate women from wearing pants by presenting them the culottes as a very viable alternative. The 1960s mini-skirts revolutionized the way women dressed. And Giorgio Armani definitely has the stature to start a new fashion revolution.
Nevertheless, if you are not ready for bloomers yet, Armani has some flirty skirts and body hugging dresses for you to enjoy. He even has well tailored coats and jackets that will go with everything in the collection, including the culottes and bloomers.
For evening, though the pieces are not are sumptuous as his haute couture collection, be rest assured that those embroidery, Swarovski crystals and beaded lace will turn heads anywhere and anytime.
But I have to add that my favorites are the jackets. In zigzags, solids or houndstooth, whether they are snug fitting or loose, cut with semi-Nehru collars or wide lapels, the Armani jackets are the best this season.
Of course, everyone knows that, even without me saying it.
