New York/ FWD/ --- Teenagehood.
In the words of "Saturday Night Live" star Molly Shannon, who sat front row at
the Girls Rule! fashion show in Bryant Park Tuesday morning, it's "that awkward time of life
when your body starts filling out."
Recalling her teenage years, Shannon added: "It can be really tough, so it's important that
young girls feel good about themselves."
Judging by looks that came down the runway of the Girls Rule! show (hosted by Teen magazine),
these teenage models were feeling pretty good. Good enough, that is, to bear it all in everything
from belly-revealing crop tops, shamelessly short denim hot pants and skintight pleather pants.
Talk about pushing the envelope, these clothes had the potential to make Teen's leather-clad
September cover model, Christina Aguilera, look chaste.
If the six designers featured in the show - Coolwear, Hybrid, Gasoline, Gia Ventola, Planet
Yumthing and Rocket 898 - wanted to offer clothes mom wouldn't let out the door, then they
succeeded.
Paying homage to the '80s, the designers showed a mix that was part "Flashdance" and early
Madonna, and part prom queen gone bad. Recurring trends included fishnet tights, halter tops,
stiletto-heeled boots and gold hoop earrings. One dress from Planet Yumthing - a short, sheer
black number bearing all - looked more like trashy lingerie than a dress.
Perhaps the show's most innovative accessory, shown by Gasoline, Gia Ventola and Rocket 898,
was the safety pin, used to secure tank tops high above the belly and bridge the gaps in slashed
up pants and T-shirts.
Ironically, the most wearable trend of the entire show, hip, chunky sneakers, came from Skechers.
To the organizers' credit, Girls Rule! does offer Fashion Week's only stage for what has become
a booming teen market.
But the six designers missed an opportunity to cater to a wider audience.
There are still plenty of self-conscious teens in "that awkward time of life" who won't wear
sheer fabrics and skintight pleather.
Today they were forgotten.
