MILAN, Jun 25, 2003 /FW/ --- Tom Ford looks to himself when designing his men's
collections, and for spring summer 2004, the designer who is originally from
Texas proposes a collection of sleekly styled chic western cowboys.
Ford has gone back to his roots, a Texan cowboy with European
influence and accessorized with footwear consisting of hand sewn
leather or crocodile boots that are even put under black tuxedos with
central ruffled shirts for evenings which are notably some of the few
black touches in the show.
Instead natural browns, white and a discete use of colour mosey down the runway to
country music.
New and old, sexy and masculine, where two continents are brought
together as the Gucci man wears short white socks with white leather tennis-shoes,
uses large overnight bags.
He irons his jeans, making sure that the line down the front is perfect and visible,
becoming a statement.
Short shorts, basketball 70s style in light fabric and short leather jackets
and padded vests over long sleeve plaid inspired shirts.
Cool white pants and light polo shirts before the beautifully tailored
evening tuxedos in beige, patterbed black and white and all black, bow
tied with high cumberbun waistlines.
Not forgetting the long winding road that he took to get to Europe, it
is a homage to his place of birth but also a celebration of the
culture to which he now belongs.
And during this Spring 2004 menswear season, when some fashion editors have already
written Tom Ford's obituary for his demise from Gucci, the designer going back
to his roots is his gracious way of saying, "Don't mess with Texas!"
