DALLAS, Oct 22, 2000/ FW/ --- Hussein Chalayan designs cover a broad spectrum - from asymmetric cuts, to pirate asymmetric corsages, to
superposed fabrics - creating forms, to floral prints. He uses a wide range of materials -
from very easygoing fabrics to lots of blue gray and tulle.
A great example of Hussein Chalayan's dramatic presentation was during Spring 2001 London Fashion Week
wherein he mixed the sci-fi film "Blade Runner" and James Bond.
The models were dressed like
replicants, that you almost expect Sean Young to walk the runway. The stage was all white and lit
with blinking fiber-optic starlight, reminding you of the opening credits of James Bond films.
The finale was unforgettable. Hussein Chalayan sent models on the stage wearing dresses made of sugar glass.
Then, they used hand mallets (which they were carrying of course) to chip away a the dresses. (See photo above.)
With such a presentation, one might think that Hussein Chalayan was insane. That is
farthest from the truth. Hussein Chalayan's talent lies in creating drama without taking away from the
clothes.
Like a great artist, he presents his creations
not for shock value but to be memorable.
