The son of design guru Sir Terence Conran, Jasper Conran was literally born (1960) to the world
of design.
At 19, when he produced his first collection, it did not really surprise anyone.
Of course, at that time, he already has a degree in Design from Parsons School of Design (1977)
and had already worked at Fiorucci (New York) and Wallis (London).
No one can say that he used his family connections to be a successful fashion designer.
His technical ability is unquestionable - fine tailoring, attention to details and use of
luxury fabrics.
Let us just say that his family name just made his climb to the top a bit smoother than others.
The British Design Council has called him a "classicist" and had awarded him the
much coveted British Designer of the Year Award in 1986.
With his signature colors of black and white, Jasper Conran has been commercially successful
since the beginning of his career.
His sleek eveningwear has been a favorite by the celebrity set. Always
elegant and understated, his bridalwear collection is also making inroads in this very
competitive market.
Conran had also accepted other challenges such as styling enhancements of the Mazda MX5 Conran.
There were only 100 units produced, showing the exclusivity of this version.
He also designs contemporary crystals for Stuart.
For his work at Stuart Crystals, Jasper Conran quoted: "When Stuart invited me to
collaborate on a collection of contemporary crystal, I approached it in the same way I approach
designing clothes - use the best materials and keep it simple."
Not afraid to face new frontiers in designing, Jasper Conran is really a chip of the old block.
Sir Terrence Conran can leave to his son the title Design Guru if he cannot give him his
knighthood.
