Jimmy Choo: It's About Details

Sep 8, 2001/FWD/ --- "Designing shoes is about making the basics work - I enjoy clever designs," Sandra Choi, designer for the Jimmy Choo ready-to-wear line, said at the presentation of her Spring/Summer 2002 collection Friday afternoon.

With its couture-quality killer heels, Jimmy Choo has established itself as a must-have among the fashionable elite, with everybody from Cate Blanchett to Madonna and the Bush twins relying on their shoes to anchor their feet.

And this season Choi delivered again. A trip from ancient Rome and Egypt to the Mediterranean in the '60s, to the French Riviera, the collection was any shoe fetish's dream - or nightmare depending on how you look at it.

The ancient Rome group showed Gladiator-inspired sandals in rich brown with dark metal studs and long leather straps going around the ankle. Gold mesh slides with the fabric twisted across the foot captured the Cleopatra spirit. "It's strong, it's domination," Choi explained.

From there, Choi envisioned Jackie O. She took a trip to the Mediterranean and had fun with colors. Open-toed silk sandals in muted pastels like soft lime green, subdued turquoise and murky baby pink were adorned with antique-looking rhinstone bows, stars or curved straps across the foot. Reminiscent of hankies of the time, Choi also presented plaid fabric - bold for the more daring, tweed-like for the more conservative.

Other themes included a young nautical selection in red, white and blue. And instead of using dark denim Choi opted for the light-colored version of the fabric. While the '80s light denim makes for an easy disaster, the mules and boots the designer dreamt up looked modern, thanks to their sleek form and shaped details.

"The lighter color you can wear with white pants or pastels - you don't have to wear denim to 'do' denim," Choi said of her choice. Yet another winner was an S&M-esque sandal in black leather with tiny square cutouts and a thick once-around ankle strap.

"With shoes it's about the details. If you find the right line, it's incredibly sexy," Choi pointed out. True, so true.
