DALLAS, Nov 26, 2000/ FW/ --- Born in Hong Kong to Chinese-Portuguese parents (1953), educated in London and based in Ireland, John Rocha is a versatile designer whose works includes womenswear, menswear, Waterford Crystals and interior design (The Morrison Hotel in Dublin).

Drawing from his Oriental-Irish background, his designs are based on simple lines yet very exquisite. The designer is well known for his creative knitwear, handpainted and embroidered pieces.

His clothes has been described as "gently and immaculately tailored," where his reputation is built on.

He was named British Designer of the Year Award (1994).

In 1997 he launched The John Rocha at Waterford Crystal Collection, which includes tabletop crystal and lighting; and Cove, a sculptural line of vases and bowls.

The Morrison Hotel in Dublin, which opened in 1999, was Rocha's first interior design project. It incorporates modern and luxurious touches like walnut wood and rich muted fabrics, and its restaurant and bar, Halo, is a destination for hip locals and visitors alike.

"I have always been interested in design, no matter what the medium, and architecture gives me the opportunity to translate my ideas into everyday surroundings to create a real sense of contemporary living and harmony," says the designer. "After working on the Morrison Hotel in Dublin and several commercial projects, I would like to develop this further, and am hoping my next challenge will involve a public housing scheme in the U.K. or Ireland."

Rocha already has an interesting architecture project under his belt. In September 2000 he began working on the redevelopment of a former post office depot in Liverpool, England into luxury apartments and penthouses. He not only developed the interior wall, floor, staircases and lighting but also the exterior courtyard and surrounding street.

Last Feb 20, 2002, he was awarded the Commander of the British Empire by the Queen of England for his contribution to fashion.
