NEW YORK, Feb 11, 2003/ FW/ --- 'It is the worst of times, it is the best of times,' wrote
Charles Dickens in 'A Tale of Two Cities.'
The current political climate, the continuing downfall of the stock market, and low consumer
confidence makes holding Fashion Week almost a mockery.
For how can anyone think of designer clothing and extravagant parties during this time.
Then you go and look at John Varvatos Fall 2003 collection and realize that the designer
is in his prime - confident and has a sure hand.
And its designers like him which make Fashion Week worth its while.
The turn of the millennium winner of the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Menswear continues
to evolve, hence the title for his Fall 2003 collection, 'A Time to Rejuvenate.'
And at times like this, he is right - 'time to reinvent, a time of renaissance in
dressing.'
The John Varvatos man is self-assured and strong, yet very discreet, very subtle,
someone we can rely on during these uncertain times.
They are not peacocks but very well dressed in their leather jackets, moleskin jeans,
cotton trench coats and easy merino sweaters.
Modern without being pretensious, conservative without being stuffy.
And what is the designer's opinion with regards to current events?
He sent out a young swain, wearing a shirt with a peace symbol on it!
