Liberty was founded by Arthur Liberty in 1875 selling ornaments, fabric and objets d'art from
Japan and the East. It became one of the most fashionable place to shop in 19th century London.
Arthur Liberty died in 1917, and 8 decades after his death, the store which bear his name remain
one of the fashionable places to shop in 21st century London.
From www.liberty.co.uk, the
company's website and online store:
Liberty is at the cutting edge of fashion with its sponsorship of new designers. The in-house
collection reflects the inspiration that London has to offer to the world. This is evident
throughout all departments with demand so high for good quality products. Liberty is still
innovative, still seeking and using the best designers of today whilst maintaining its depth
of history. Liberty continues to be forward thinking and at the forefront of design, setting
trends rather than following them. The ethos of Arthur Lasenby Liberty still applies, Liberty
is its own style.
For Spring 2001, Liberty in-house designers created a kaleidoscope of colors for beach and daywear. From
solids, to stripes to avant-garde prints, the collection has 1960's influence, updated for the more
sophisticated styling of 2001.
