Lloyd Klein: French Drama Unfolds

Lloyd Klein's Fall 2001 collection may have been inspired by a French film, but the clothes
looked more like they belonged in a funeral parlor than springtime in Paris.
"The collection is inspired by 'Last Tango In Paris,' but I wanted to do something different,
something harder," Klein explained, as a stylist rolled an asymmetrical black leather dress out
from the back.
"Lloyd called me in Paris and asked me if I could come, and I was happy to do it," said actress
Maria Schneider, the actress from the original "Last Tango in Paris" who ensured that butter
would never again be just another dairy product, "but these clothes really have nothing to do
with the movie."
"Last season I was in the mood for color. This time I wanted no color," Klein added.
And indeed, everything that came down the Frenchman's runway was black, except for one shiny
suit in dark magenta. Klein kept it simple with long black velvet gowns with draping, crepe
fabric and silks, and added details like shiny leather dominatrix arm bands and chokers with
his name on them. And although some of the slim belted suits with deep V-necks were chic, the
thing that will stick in everyone's mind about this show was the fact that all of the models'
breasts were falling out of their tops (maybe this was also inspired by the movie?). In fact,
Nicky's mom Kathy Hilton went backstage and told Nicky she did not like her low-cut suit with
transparent top. "You are not going out there like that," she said, making her daughter button
it up before facing the paparazzi, thus saving Nicky's wholesome (!) reputation.
But so what if the clothes were anticlimactic? There was plenty of drama unfolding backstage
where the Nars makeup team successfully averted disaster and managed to get everyone beautiful
in record time. First Paris Hilton stormed off unexpectedly while her makeup was being applied
(she came back all smiles a few minutes later). Then a French girl showed up in her own makeup
and refused to let master makeup artist Ayoko touch her. "This girl is a nightmare," said one
of the handlers backstage. "Lloyd came to ask her personally if she would please wear the makeup,
and she said no." I asked her in French what the problem was, and she started gesturing wildly
and said something about not being able to handle people poking at her eyes. Guess we know now
she's in the wrong business.
"She thinks that she is Naomi Campbell - but she's not. In fact, Naomi works with Ayoko all the
time," said another. Anyway, she ended up wearing her own aqua blue eye shadow that looked
nothing like the other girls on the runway, who Ayoko styled using black eye shadow mixed with
Vaseline for "a smoky look that is not too classic," she said. She topped off the look with a
matte, "not shiny" face and a mixture of two nude lip shades, "Belle de Jour" and "Classified."
Maybe the leather-clad Nars artists should moonlight as crisis hotline operators - even during
the chaos, they were calmly custom feathering the fake eyelashes minutes before the lights went
down. "We deal with this all the time, all kinds of situations," one told me, brandishing a can
of glitter hair spray and giant scissors, "but the important thing to do is just stay calm -
and we always get the job done."
